Jamaica was originally occupied by Indians
(Tainos), then later by the Spaniards and the English. Africans
and Indians were brought into the country to work. The Chinese
migrated to Jamaica as tradesmen and shopkeepers. Other nationals
have made Jamaica home. All these nationals intermarry to
become integral to Jamaica’s growth and development.
The history and culture of Jamaica is a result of the mixture
of several cultures.
Jamaicans enjoy meals of
African, Chinese, English and Indian origins. Some places in
the island are named after the Tainos (Guanaboa), Spaniards(Oracabessa),
English(Devon), Welsh(Llandovery) Scotsmen(Aberdeen), Irish(Irish
Town) Germans(Stettin), Africans(Quashie River) East Indians(Madras)
and Free Villages(Sligoville). The National Motto, “Out
of Many, one people”, comes from the grand mixture of
cultures that combine to form a unique JAMAICAN CULTURE.
